MISSION

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to ALL mankind.

AKA HISTORY

On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Our guiding light, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, envisioned the sorority as a commitment to leadership both on campus and beyond, nurturing sisterhood and friendship among college women. Alongside 19 other women, Ethel worked diligently to promote the growth and success of Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard and beyond. On January 29, 1913, the sorority was incorporated, making it the first Greek-letter organization created by African-American women. Since then, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has devoted itself to serving ALL mankind for 117 years and continues to do so!

Omicron Pi History

In 1987, four women from Georgetown University and Trinity College envisioned scholarship, sisterhood, and service, recognizing that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® embodied these qualities. The initiates were Sharonne Robinson Bonardi, Nicole L. Lang, Lillian René Brooks, and L. Dionne Hansen.

On January 20, 1989, sixteen women chartered the Omicron Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at Catholic University, Georgetown University, Trinity Washington University, and the former Mount Vernon College. Omicron Pi members began planting seeds of legacy in the nation’s capital with various program initiatives. They sponsored signature programs promoting Alpha Kappa Alpha’s ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood, including the DC Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk and partnerships with Asbury Dwellings and the Capital Area Food Bank.

Omicron Pi fosters community by engaging in activities with those they serve. Their relationship with Asbury Dwellings, a senior home in D.C., demonstrates this commitment. Each year, Omicron Pi and its graduate chapter, Xi Zeta Omega, host bingo nights and holiday parties for seniors, providing entertainment and essential gifts to winners.

Over the years, Omicron Pi has built a strong bond with the Capital Area Food Bank, providing families with non-perishable food items for warm meals. They also collaborate with the Greater D.C. Diaper Bank to support families in need.

Omicron Pi works with local fraternities, sororities, and organizations to address issues facing the African American community, including participating in the annual D.C. Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk.

Through sisterly relations activities, Omicron Pi builds connections with college-aged women to ensure the growth of sisterhood. Their social media serves as a vital tool for engaging members, exchanging ideas, and connecting with the local community and young women they serve.
